The Amalfi Coast is a series of small bays, beaches, villages and towns, all with a backdrop of rugged cliffs.
The road that hugs the cliffs affords one of the most spectacular drives in Europe. Everywhere are orange, lemon and olive groves, vineyards, lush greenery and flowering shrubs - all near to the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea. On this tour we will take in all the wonderful sights in the region and tantalize our taste buds by sampling the local specialties; extra-virgin olive oil, mozzarella cheese and Limoncello (the local liqueur). We will even have the opportunity to make our own "Neapolitan" pizza!
Our tour begins with 5-nights in the resort town of Maiori, which has its own beach and tree-lined promenade. The hills and cliffs form a wonderful backdrop, but the town itself is not hilly and it's easy to stroll through the narrow streets and lanes with their interesting shops, cafes and churches. For the more energetic there are superb walking trails to explore.
We then transfer to Sorrento for a 7-night stay. This is the most picturesque town on the Amalfi coast, perched high on the cliffs with stunning views over the Bay of Naples to the distant Mount Vesuvius. Sorrento offers many restaurants, cafes, shops and a local market. Other small towns and villages along the coast are also accessible by local transport.
All hotels on this tour have a restaurant, bar and lounge, and the guestrooms are simply furnished and equipped with twin beds, telephone, TV and private bathroom.
Our Maiori hotel is the Reginna Palace (or similar), located in the town centre across from the beach and promenade. The local bus stops nearby and there are many restaurants and cafes all around.
Our hotel in Sorrento will be one of the popular Acampora properties in Italy , all of which are located seaside on the cliff, with impressive views of the Bay of Naples and within walking distance of the town centre.
* Those joining any of our tours to Europe must be able to walk fairly long distances and climb stairs easily.
Itinerary / Excursions
We depart for Rome - a direct non-stop flight from Toronto.
Upon arrival in Rome we transfer to our hotel in Maiori, stopping en route for an included lunch.
We meet with our local guide for an orientation walking tour of Maiori. We‘ll see the beautiful Italian style gardens, the interesting local church and winding narrow streets and shops.
This morning we visit Ravello and the Villa Rufolo, the inspiration for some of musician Richard Wagner's famous works. We then continue to the beautiful town of Amalfi for a walking tour and some free time to explore.
Today we enjoy a boat trip to Positano, one of the coast’s most picturesque towns, with steeply-stacked houses tumbling down to the sea in a cascade of sun-bleached peach, pink and terracotta colours. Its steep streets and narrow lanes are lined with wisteria-draped cafes, restaurants and boutiques.
We visit the artisan town of Vietri Sul Mare, where the local people produce and sell beautiful Italian ceramics - a great place to buy that special souvenir.
Today we travel over the mountains, taking in the scenic views as we proceed to the resort town of Sorrento.
We begin our day with an orientation walking tour of the cliff-top town of Sorrento. We see the main square and the Piazza Tasso - always a hive of activity, and we also visit the Wood Inlay Museum. We then proceed to Galatea Farm in the Sorrento hills where we are welcomed by the staff and given an explanation of the workings of this small farm. We enjoy a tasting of local wines and participate in a cooking lesson and pizza making demonstration during which we make our own personal "Neapolitan" pizzas.
We enjoy a morning tour to Pompeii, the ruins of a once thriving community destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD.
A day at leisure. Of course there is so much to do and see in the city and in this region. Your Tour Manager will be on hand to offer suggestions and optional tours.
We catch the ferry from Sorrento to the lovely island of Capri and its famous Blue Grotto. Capri was once a summer resort for Roman Emperors. During our tour we visit the famous Piazzetta and the Garden of Augustus with its view of the Faraglioni Rocks. There will be some free time for shopping before returning to Sorrento.
At leisure to enjoy Sorrento's fine shopping and cafes, as well as the beautiful views and surroundings. Optional excursions will be offered. On one of the evenings we will attend a performance of local tradition, dance and songs at the Tasso Theatre.
We depart for Rome. En route we will stop in the lively city of Naples for a panoramic tour, a visit of the Royal Palace and lunch at a local restaurant. Later we arrive in Rome for our Farewell Dinner and overnight.
We fly home to Canada.
