We've travelled a lot over the years, and have picked up some very useful packing tips and tricks along the way. Whether you're staying close to home or going somewhere more far-flung, these ideas will help you travel lighter, look more put-together, and avoid mishaps and frustrations along the way.
Here's 10 packing tips that make travel easier (and more fun):
1. Instead of packing random pieces, plan combinations
A trending approach on Instagram is “packing sudoku” (look it up, there are lots of great ideas online). Choose nine core items (3 tops, 3 bottoms, 3 layering pieces) and lay them out in a 3×3 grid. The rule is simple: every piece has to work with every other piece. It’s a quick way to cut overpacking and still have plenty of outfit options.
2. Roll, don’t fold
Rolling your clothes saves space and makes it easier to see everything in your bag at once. Bonus: fewer wrinkles when you unpack.
3. Use packing cubes strategically
Group items into categories (t-shirts, swimsuits, dresses, socks and underwear). You’ll spend less time rummaging around trying to find things, and it’s easy to keep your suitcase neat and organized, which is handy if you’re moving around a lot from place to place.
4. Pack a first night kit
Make sure everything you need for the first night is in your carry-on. Think toothbrush, bathing suit, phone charger, medications, and one change of clothes. If you arrive late or your checked bag ends up elsewhere, having what you need can be a real lifesaver.
5. Stop leaks in their tracks
Even containers that say they’re leak-proof can get squished or broken in transit. Avoid getting shampoo all over your clothes with a small extra step: wrap liquids and creams in paper towels and slip them into a resealable bag. Another idea? Wrap a rubber band around the neck of any pump bottle (like shampoo) to lock it in the down position so there’s no accidental dispensing in transit.
6. Take a pic of your packed bag
Snap a quick photo of the contents before you zip up. It’s surprisingly helpful for insurance claims, or even just remembering what you actually brought so you don’t have to unpack the whole thing to find an outfit.
8. Pack a big scarf
A big wrap is super multifunctional, it can be a blanket or pillow on the plane, go over your bathing suit by the pool or at the beach, or serve as a head covering as you explore temples and churches that require it. And of course, it’s the perfect way to keep you warm yet elegant when the evenings get cool.
9. Bring a fold-up tote
A lightweight bag takes up zero space and can come in very handy for shopping, day trips, and unexpected extras on the way home. We particularly like the thin ones that fold up into their own little pockets.
10. Pack a power strip
One small, flat travel power strip can be a game-changer, especially on long haul flights where outlets might be scarce and you need to charge your devices. Your seatmates will appreciate it too! .
