Active pace with longer touring days. Expect intermittent walking at a moderate pace for 2–3 hours over a variety of terrain, including cobblestones, hills and uneven pavements. Must be able to negotiate stairs of varying heights, sometimes without handrails. Can tolerate periods of standing during guided tours and be able to climb in/out of various modes of transportation. Some days may include 5–7 km of walking over the course of the day.
Today we fly to Porto via Lisbon, beginning our exciting journey to Portugal’s enchanting Douro Valley. Relax and enjoy our overnight flight as we anticipate the unforgettable days ahead.
Upon arrival in Porto, we meet our local guide and enjoy a charming tram ride through the city to the mouth of the Douro, including a fascinating visit to the Tram Museum before lunch at a local restaurant. Later, we board the elegant MS Amalia Rodrigues, celebrate with a Welcome Cocktail and dinner, and head out again to admire beautiful Porto illuminated at night.
This morning, we explore Porto’s historic treasures, including the magnificent Church of St. Francis, the grand Bolsa Palace (also known as the Stock Exchange Palace), and a traditional azulejo tile workshop where we discover this cherished Portuguese art form. This afternoon we begin cruising the spectacular Douro Valley toward Régua, enjoying breathtaking vineyard scenery and a relaxing evening onboard.
We visit the fascinating Douro Museum before touring the stunning 18th-century Mateus Palace, strolling through its beautiful gardens and learning about its noble history. Returning to our ship, we cruise deeper into the heart of the vineyard-covered valley and enjoy lively Flamenco entertainment in the evening.
Today we travel to the golden city of Salamanca, where Roman, Arabic, and Christian influences create one of Spain’s most breathtaking architectural showcases. After a guided tour of this UNESCO treasure, we return to our ship for dinner and onboard entertainment.
A relaxing morning cruise allows us to fully appreciate the serene beauty of the Douro River as it winds through terraced vineyards. This afternoon we explore the Port Wine Route and enjoy a tasting in Pinhão, followed by our festive Gala Dinner onboard.
We begin the day with a guided visit to the charming town of Lamego, known for its impressive sanctuary and historic streets. As we cruise back toward Porto, we enjoy a memorable evening of traditional Fado entertainment.
This morning, we enjoy free time in Porto to explore at our own pace, perhaps browsing local shops or relaxing at a café. In the afternoon, we visit historic Guimarães, considered the birthplace of Portugal, followed by lively traditional folk entertainment onboard.
After disembarking, we travel to Fátima, one of the world’s most important pilgrimage sites, where we explore the famous sanctuary and have time for lunch on our own. We then continue to Lisbon for our three-night stay, gathering together this evening for dinner at our hotel.
Today we discover the highlights of Lisbon, including Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery, and the Monument to the Discoveries, all celebrating Portugal’s proud maritime history. The afternoon is ours to explore more of this beautiful hilltop city at our own pace.
We journey to the fairytale town of Sintra, long cherished by Portuguese royalty and admired by poets such as Lord Byron. High atop a hill, we tour the colourful Pena Palace before enjoying free time and returning to Lisbon for dinner together
This morning, we transfer to the airport for our flight home, filled with wonderful memories of Portugal’s landscapes, culture, and warm hospitality.
